Clinical Neurophysiology
Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and Electromyography (EMG) are clinical investigations that can be used to assist in the evaluation and diagnosis of disorders of nerves and muscles.
WHAT IS INVOLVED?
Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)
NCS involve the application of electrical impulses using a stimulator probe over defined skin sites under which nerves travel. The responses to these impulses are measured by skin surface electrodes (recording pads). NCS can be helpful in diagnosing nerve entrapment and characterising the nature of nerve disorders.
Electromyography (EMG)
EMG is a technique which involves sampling muscle electrical activity using a fine needle. EMG can be helpful in characterising the extent and severity of nerve disorders and in the assessment of diseases of muscle.
NCS and EMG can be performed individually or together, depending on the condition under evaluation.
