Therapies
Our doctors focus on the delivery of evidence based Neurologic therapeutics in the context of a holistic framework that considers individual patient needs. Treatments prescribed at Integrated Neurology include medications, Botulinum Toxin, Deep Brain Stimulation and Neurorehabilitation. Our doctors work closely with General Practitioners, Psychiatrists, other medical specialists and Allied Health practitioners to optimise outcomes for our patients.
Medications
Medications are utilised in Neurologic and Rehabilitation Medicine Practice to improve symptom control and in some instances to prevent further deterioration or modify disease course.
Medications need to be employed with care to maximise on benefit and minimise side effects. Medication management is a key aspect of Neurologic and Rehabilitation Medicine practice. All of our Specialists are experts in Medication management with subspecialty expertise. Click here for their Biographies.
Botulinum Toxin
Botulinum Toxin is an injectable therapeutic derived from the naturally occurring toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. More widely known for its use in cosmetic medicine, Botulinum Toxin has an excellent evidence base for the treatment of a variety of Neurologic conditions characterised by excessive and involuntary movement including Dystonia and Spasticity. It is delivered by injection into specific muscles dependent on the clinical indication. Botulinum Toxin is available on PBS prescription for many neurologic conditions.
Dr Jason Gu, Dr Michal Lubomski and Dr Hannah Shin are Botulinum Toxin injectors for Neurologic and Rehabilitation conditions respectively.
Deep Brain Stimulation
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) refers to a technique whereby electrodes are implanted in specific deep brain structures by a dedicated neurosurgical team. These wires are then routed under the skin to an implanted stimulator device which delivers continuous therapy. DBS is currently utilised for a variety of disorders of human movement where medication response is not satisfactory. These conditions include Parkinson’s Disease, Dystonia, Tremor and Tourette’s Syndrome.
All of our neurologists have undertaken additional sub-specialty training in Deep Brain Stimulation management and are active DBS practitioners. Dr Silberstein is one of the most experienced operative DBS Neurologists in Australia having performed operative planning, intra-operative neurophysiology and inpatient DBS management for over 450 patients.
Dr Shin takes an active role in rehabilitation management in the short and long term post DBS. Further information regarding DBS can be obtained on the sydneydbs website.
Neurorehabilitation
Neurorehabilitation refers to a broad variety of therapies administered by doctors and Allied Health practitioners with the aim of harnessing brain and muscle reserve through targeted interventions (such as Botulinum Toxin), focussed exercise programs, home modifications and mobilisation of community resources.
Neurorehabilitation can be undertaken on an outpatient or inpatient basis and is a strong focus of Dr Shin’s rehabilitation practice. Dr Shin is a Visiting Medical Officer to Hunters Hill Private Hospital, where, in addition to providing general rehabilitation services, she is the clinical lead to the Parkinson’s Reconditioning Program.
